Description
Lavender Mailette (Lavandula angustifolia), also known as “Purple Haze“, is a true lavender and has special qualities. It is grown for its oil and not for it’s floral component as it is not a very attractive plant unlike the commonly known ornamental lavender. This plant has to grow 700m above sea level, and is a temperamental plant with erratic delivery at best. It takes a long time and much care to get the plant to flourish albeit only seasonal. Harvesting is done once a year only, in December, giving a yield that quickly runs out after the season due to its current popularity.
The flower and stalk is used to produce this essential oil and distilling must be done in a short period of time since harvesting must happen as soon as wilting is already evident. Propagation of the plant from cutting is very low without proper heating and temperature control.
The benefit of Lavender Mailette is that it contains a higher concentrations of linalyl acetate and linalool, with very low cineole and camphor components. The price of Purple Haze is significantly higher than that of conventional oil for the other lavandins. The high concentration of linalyl acetate is considered the most important constituent for lavender’s soothing and relaxing, antispasmodic aromatherapy effects.
The oil is also distinctive in it’s softer, more gentle floral fragrance with little camphor on the nose. This makes Lavender Mailette the preferred choice, especially for children, sensitive people and people with compromised immune systems. Also people that are sensitive to camphor or cineole.
