Jock itch is a fungal infection that commonly affects men in the groin area. It is caused by a type of fungus called Tinea cruris (aka dermatophytes), which thrives in warm, moist environments. It is a problem familiar especially to athletes, and it is often caused by wearing tight briefs or jeans. Jock itch can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, and it can affect a man’s life in several ways.
- Physical discomfort: Jock itch can cause intense itching, burning, and pain in the groin area. These symptoms can be exacerbated by sweating, tight clothing, and friction from physical activity, making it difficult to engage in sports or other physical activities.
- Social embarrassment: Jock itch can cause redness, flaking, and a rash in the groin area, which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable in social situations. Men may feel self-conscious about their appearance and may avoid activities such as swimming or going to the gym.
- Sexual difficulties: Jock itch can also affect a man’s sexual life. The itching and discomfort can make it difficult to engage in sexual activity, and the embarrassment of the condition may lead to decreased sexual confidence.
- Psychological impact: Living with jock itch can also have a psychological impact on a man. The constant discomfort and embarrassment can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
In summary, jock itch can affect a man’s life physically, socially, sexually, and psychologically. Seeking prompt treatment and taking preventive measures such as keeping the groin area clean and dry can help alleviate symptoms and prevent the spread of the infection.
Boxer shorts help to keep the air circulating. Oiled skin is also better for keeping the fungus at bay, which is why it features in the two-part treatment below:
Jock Itch Essential Oils
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Fragonia (Agonis fragrans) Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium)
You can use any one of the oils listed above – try them all and pick your favourite. Tea tree is a very popular oil, easy to find and has many skin care benefits. Tea tree is powerful so be careful to use only very little. Dilute 2 drops tea tree essential oil (or your favourite) in a bowl of water. Wash the area, and dry well.
Also, use 2 drops tea tree essential oil (or your favourite from the above list), diluted in 1 teaspoon (5 mL) carrier oil like the very trusted neutral grapeseed oil.

As with any natural supporting self care treatment it is important to consult with a qualified healthcare provider before using essential oils, especially if you are taking any medications or have any underlying health conditions.
